SSL Certificate - What and Why?

An SSL Certificate (Secure Sockets Layer), also called a Digital Certificate, creates a secure link between a website and a visitor`s browser. SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization’s details.

When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. By ensuring that all data passed between the two remains private and secure, SSL encryption prevents hackers from stealing private information such as credit card numbers, names and addresses.

Websites with SSL Certificate installed will be marked as safe and highlighted with padlock icon in browser when browsing. With recent update of Mozilla Firefox and some other browsers, the websites which do not have SSL Certificate installed will be highlighted as "Not Secure" when browsing.
